How it happened

Puffy is a male Toy Poodle—a breed known for having some of the worst dental health of any dog. At age five, during a routine check-up, his veterinarian noted signs of dental issues. A year later, Puffy required his first major dental surgery.

Six teeth had to be extracted during the first operation. Two years later, during a second surgery, three more were removed. Puffy was only seven years old—and he had lost nine teeth to a preventable disease that had been silently progressing for years.

Lessons learned

Dogs do not show pain the way humans do. Puffy kept eating, playing, and acting like his usual self—even as an infection was spreading beneath his gums. By the time the signs became obvious, the disease was advanced and irreversible.

Toy Poodles, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, and many other small breeds have such small jaws that their teeth become crowded and overlap, creating areas that are impossible to clean properly at home.Without a consistent daily routine—and regular veterinary visits—periodontal disease develops rapidly.

Puffy’s story is not unique. It is a story that thousands of dog owners experience every year—often without ever realizing what is happening until it is too late.

Why DentiPaws exists

After my second surgery, my human spent weeks reading every veterinary study she could find. She learned that dental disease is one of the most common — and most preventable — conditions in dogs. She found that only a small fraction of owners brush consistently. That the fishy breath she'd noticed wasn't cosmetic — it was active bacterial infection.

The research existed. But nobody had made it genuinely accessible for regular dog owners. Nobody had simply said: "Your breed is high risk. Here is what to do. Start today."
